STATESMAN OPINION: AKUFO-ADDO GOV’T MUST REMAIN FOCUSED

Politics

In their desperate quest to take the attention of Ghanaians from the life-touching and transformational policies that are being implemented by the Akufo-Addo government, some faceless individuals have decided to come out with a vile propaganda to suggest that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is preparing to contest the 2020 presidential slot of the New Patriotic Party.

The Daily Statesman is not surprised at all by this negative agenda because we believe it is part of efforts to ‘knock heads’ within the rank and file of the party, and particularly create the rather false impression that instead of helping the president to deliver on his mandate, the Vice President is rather more interested in his political ambition.

We are glad the Office of the Vice President has issued a quick response to debunk the claim. We want to stress the point that Dr Bawumia has shown to all and sundry that he is focused on the task of supporting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to bring development to the good people of Ghana.

On December 7, 2016, Ghanaians went to the polls with one thing in mind: to change the incompetent Mahama-led National Democratic Congress and usher new the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party government to turn around the fortunes of the country.

It is an undeniable fact that Ghanaians, after witnessing the NPP government in power for nine months, have not regretted choosing Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia as President and Vice respectively.

The president and his vice have so far shown that they and the NPP government are determined to continue working assiduously to deliver to meet the needs and aspirations of the people, and we believe they really remain focused.

With the instrumental role he have been playing in respect of very important programmes like the paperless system that was introduced at the port on September 1, this year, as well as the Digital Address System that would be launched soon, among others, we believe President Nana Akufo-Addo is fortunate to have a vice president who is really up to the task, unlike the nation had witnessed in the recent past.

With the impressive performance of the government, we believe the desperate attempt by those behind the propaganda only confirms the claims among some government functionaries that some people in the country appear uncomfortable about the rate at which the Akufo-Addo government is delivering on its campaign promises to the nation.

And the only option available to them now is to go every extent to make claims and engage in the kind of propaganda that will take the shine out of the many positive developments taking place in the country, and further seek to derail the focus of the Akufo-Addo government.

But we are convinced the president, his vice and all other functionaries of the government will remain focused on the delivering to make life more comfortable for the masses. In fact, that was what the electorate voted them into office to do, and we don’t expect any other from them.
